Specialising in hip hop, funk, jazz and soul, Fat City Records opened as a small record shop in Manchester's Affleck's Palace in February 1993. In the subsequent years Fat City has grown into a three-stranded music organisation. The Fat City Record shop expanded several times over the years before finally residing in Oldham Street, the cultural Northern Quarter of Manchester. In August 2009 the Fat City shop closed its outlet in Oldham St and the business moved to London where it continues to be at the forefront of online music retailing.

Born and raised in London, James Choules fascination with typography began with the album cover, merchandising and band artwork of 70’s heavy rock. Scratching logos into his school desk, painting on the back of his leather jacket or creating the logo for his own secondry school hard rock trio his natural ambitions with drawing found a new outlet with the discovery of new York Subway graffiti. Xlarge began in November 1991. The very first XLarge store opened in Los Angeles on Vermont Ave - a street in which a scene had already been developed. It was a combination of skateboarding, hip-hop, art, and cultural changes that were happening in the early 90’s.There were a few other shops that sold similar products, but XLarge was the only store that had everything - from Ben Davis to Carharrt,Adidas to Puma - and an original line of clothing with a utilitarian flavor.
